Social Security Registration as Non-Professional Caregiver for Dependent Persons

Once the Individual Care Plan (PIA) under the family care modality is approved, the caregiving parent can register with Social Security as a Non-Professional Caregiver. IMSERSO pays the contribution fees in full — the caregiver pays nothing while accumulating contributions toward retirement, permanent disability, and other benefits. Since 2023, caregivers also have the right to training and family respite care programs.

Requirements

• •Dependency recognition decision (Grade I, II, or III)
• •The PIA must specify the family environment care modality
• •The caregiver must be a family member or a close relative/acquaintance
• •Not employed full-time (compatible with part-time employment)
• •Regular cohabitation or effective availability to provide care

Steps to follow

1. 1Verify that the dependency decision specifies the family care modality in the PIA. If not, request a review of the PIA at Social Services.
2. 2Visit your autonomous community's Social Services or access the IMSERSO online portal (Sede Electrónica) to apply for registration as a Non-Professional Caregiver, providing the dependency decision and the PIA.
3. 3The administration processes the registration within 1 to 3 months. You will receive confirmation of registration under Social Security's Special Scheme for Non-Professional Caregivers.
4. 4From the date of registration, IMSERSO automatically pays Social Security contributions each month — you do not need to pay or manage anything.
5. 5Inquire with your autonomous community regarding the family respite care and caregiver training programs to which you are entitled upon registration.
